With a significant number of members signed up we will commence and continue to lobby parliament for changes is legislation along the following lines
A simple addition to The Sale of Goods Act, making it an offence to sell or offer for sale any item that has had its serial number removed. To remove the serial numbers will take some deliberate effort. Making this an offence may deter the unscrupulous second hand dealers and the car boot markets from selling or purchasing items that do not display manufactures serial number.
Section 22 Theft Act 1968 (handling stolen goods) definitions regarding this section already state that the removal of identifying marks is a good reason for suspecting that item to be stolen.
The truth is that honest people do not have in their possession items of property that do not have serial numbers. Yes, you may have one or two where regular use has damaged or caused the number to be accidentally removed. However it is extremely unlikely that honest households have more than five items that have had the serial numbers removed or damaged
myserialnumbers will also be lobby for additions legislation under Sec 22 Theft Act making it an absolute offence for any person without lawful authority or reasonable excuse to be in possession of five or more items that have had serial numbers removed or altered.
