Using the site and other useful information

It should be an offence to remove serial numbers

It is an offence to remove or alter the registration number on your car, it is an absolute offence to remove the serial number from a firearm, it is an offence to alter the serial number of certain documents such as passports and cheques.

Currently It is not an offence to remove the manufactures serial number from electrical items.

We believe it should be and by registering with myserialnumbers you are also agreeing to that statement.

The myserialnumbers site is also acts as a petition, which we intend to use to lobby parliament for a change in legislation to make it an offence under the sale of goods act to sell or offer for sale items that have had their serial numbers removed. protect our serial numbers

What is different about myserialnumbers

A database is only useful when it contains update and accurate information. There are many asset registers to which you can send in a list of marked or identifiable property. You cannot view that list nor do you know who else and how many others can. Your list will only be updated if you remember to inform the owners of the database that you have made a new purchase or you no longer own previously listed item.. The advantage of recording your serial numbers online is that you can view your records whenever you want to, it is simple, quick and easy for you to keep your records updated, no other person has access to any of your personal information.

Once registered your list will never be

LOST, STOLEN, THROWN AWAY, DELETED, BURNT or SIMPLY FORGOTTEN.

Why should I have a record of my serial numbers?

Approximately half of all police stolen reports do not contain the serial number information. This is simply because the owners have not kept a record of their numbers or they have lost their records long ago. Most people can tell you the manufacturers name but they cannot tell you the model or the serial number.

Expensive electrical items are already marked with a unique serial number, this is your serial number and recognised by the police and insurers as a means for proof of ownership. The serial number is the first number that the police ask you for if you report an item stolen and it is the first number they check when they recover a suspected stolen item.

How will this help the Police?

The United Kingdom has 53 Police Forces; each force operates their own independent found property, crime property and crime recording systems. This means when property is stolen from one force area and then later recovered in another, it is unlikely that the finding force will ever trace the real owners.

Unless of course that items of property has been marked with a current postcode or is registered with a property marking company.

or

You have registered your serial numbers online with myserialnumbers.

Top tip: Your serial numbers are unique don't be afraid to say that they are yours.

Why don't I just use an ultra violet pen to mark my property with my postcode?

Is every item in your house marked with your current postcode? No, thereÕs a surprise

Postcoding your property hasnÕt been as successful as you might think. Most household items that come into police possession are not marked with a postcode and if they are it is now hardly readable or it is no longer valid. Yet individually marking items of property with a postcode is still considered good practise.

So what is the problem?

  • When you move house, your postcode will also alter, some people change address regularly.
  • What about if you want to sell the item, will you remember to remove your postcode, (how easy is that? VERY is the answer)
  • Maybe you have engraved or scratched your postcode onto the item, how much is that item worth now?
  • Maybe you have recently purchase a new item, but you havenÕt got a UV pen
  • With myserialnumbers it doesnÕt matter how often you move house, now thereÕs no need to deface and devalue your new television or any other property for that matter. You donÕt even need an engraving kit or a special pen.
  • Your postcode, your serial numbers and the Internet are the simple solution to an ailing system.
  • Recording your serial numbers with the national database is the simplest of all the property marking solutions. Why pay a fortune for innovative technical solutions when what you already purchased a uniquely marked item

Top tip: Your property is already marked with a serial number........USE IT

Sentimental value

Arguably the most commonly stolen items during a domestic burglary are video recorders or DVD players at the same time the thieves help themselves to a few items of jewellery, your favourite broach or the pocket watch granddad left you.
You may be surprised to know that the police regularly recover these items and they are still together wrapped inside a pillowcase or bin liner. This is when your serial numbers will really work for you and help the police reunite you with your other unidentifiable precious items of property.

Top tip: Never keep your sentimental or precious jewellery in jewellery boxes.

Stop suspects getting away with it

Police often find property that they suspect to be stolen, but without a lost or stolen report the officers have no choice but to accept the story made up by the suspected thief. ÔI brought it off a fella in the pubÕ. Everyone knows that he didnÕt, itÕs more likely that the owner hasnÕt yet realised it is missing. The suspect is released without charge and worse still he is allowed to take away the stolen property.

Top tip: Register your serial numbers, donÕt let them get away with it

What happens to stolen property

Police property stores are full of identifiable property, thousands of items that have been subject of an insurance claim and payout. Thousands of items that now belong to insurance companies, but without any means of proving ownership those items are sold off through public auctions with the revenue being used to fund police operations.

Through myserialnumbers you are able to tag items that have been reported stolen so if the item is later found, it can be returned to you or your insurer. Once your claim is settled the lawful owner of that property will be the insurer, if you donÕt want the property back then it should be the insurer who sells that item at auction, not the police.

Top tip: Tell your insurer that you have registered and ask for a premium discount. If everyone was registered it might mean cheaper insurance all of us.

Your serial numbers

The vast majority of stolen items stored in police property rooms still have serial numbers intact and undamaged, clearly criminals do not always remove the serial number.

Recording your serial number has long been recognised as the best way of proving your ownership, but without a receipt can you provide proof of when that item came into your possession? myserialnumbers is date and time stamped therefore recording the exact moment that you register you claim to ownership.

To further protect your claim and your serial numbers, we at ListedA2Z will be lobbying Members of Parliament in order to pass legislation under the Sale of Goods Act whereby it will be an offence to sell certain electrical items that have clearly had serial numbers removed.

If someone finds an item that I have registered will they be told my name and address?

NO!

We will never give out any of your personal information to the police or the public.

The public can search and see if a found item is registered. The searcher will need to know the make, model and full serial number of the item.

The public will only be told that an item is registered and if it is being offered for sale then that person is asked to inform the police immediately.

If a member of the public finds a registered item they should hand it at their local police station.

The police can either contact us direct at which point, we will then telephone them back using the recognised call back procedure to a listed police telephone number and provide the officer with your postcode or crime number details.

If the police officer is authorised then they can make use of a confidentially online police search facility, but again the result of the search will only be your postcode or a crime number.

myserialnumbers security labels

Our security labels perform a number of tasks

In the first instance the label is designed to deter the thief and the receiver, it is a proven fact that marked and registered items of property are less likely to be stolen. Included in the label pack is a window sticker informing any would be thief that all your serial numbers are registered.

The labels also inform the police where the item is registered.

The label only marks the item with registration information so if you sell that item the new owner can simply register the change of ownership. If anyone attempts to register an item that is already registered or has been reported stolen then the police will automatically be informed.

Statutory Rights

none of the information below affects your statutory rights. We are a UK based company, subject to UK consumer law so dealing with myserialnumbers is completely safe.

what do I do if there's any problem with my order?

if you have any problems with an order from myserialnumbers, send us an email to purchasequeries@myserialnumbers.co.uk or phone our customer care line on 07792 258 161. We'll tell you exactly what steps we're going to take to rectify the problem.

when will myserialnumbers charge my credit/switch card?

your card will be charged immediately as this is a service offering and there is no despatch of goods.

is my credit/switch card number secure?

Yes! The area of myserialnumbers that collects your credit card information is hosted on worldpays secure server. Before you can send us your details, your computer establishes a direct connection to this server. The latest encryption technology (SSL) is used to enable secure transfer of your personal data over the Internet.

Now that's pretty secure but, if you're still not convinced, think about this:

Every time you buy petrol or a meal or pay a bill with your credit card, somebody could copy down the number. Every time you give your card number over the phone, someone could be listening. Think how many people in the world know your card number. Hundreds probably. Why don't they use that number to order loads of stuff by mail order? Because it would be easy to catch them by looking at the address on the packages and they'd go to jail! Here's the really good bit, though. You wouldn't have to pay, even if someone else did use your card fraudulently. So, in fact, a credit card is the safest way of ordering anything mail order, whether by phone, fax or on-line.

We hope that's convinced you!

will my email address be passed on to third parties?

absolutely not. All your details are treated as strictly confidential. We're Internet users, too, and we know how annoying unsolicited email can be. We wouldn't risk annoying you by being the cause of it.

does the myserialnumbers site use cookies?

yes it does. Cookies (tiny text files, temporarily stored on your computer) are needed to allow us to ensure that you are correctly connected to your item register and to stop others from getting to your item register. We're sorry if this offends you but there's no other way for us to make it all work.
